By reducing competition for water, the mats greatly increase survival & growth rates, as well as reduce vole damage to stems. Often best to kill grass before installing.

plantskydd animal repellent: 2.2 lb. carton of soluble powder, stores well. Made of food-grade dried blood & vegetable oil. Will treat about 500 seedlings. Lasts about 4 months. Apply each spring & fall until plants are large enough to not need it.

bud cap netting: Each foot of tubing caps 2 trees. A flexible, stretchable net tube. Protects seedlings from browsing. Apply each fall until leader is out deer’s reach. Works on broadleaves & conifers.

tree handbook: 48 pages. How to successfully plant & care for your trees. Tree species, energy conservation, & cost-share grant information.

Backyard woods handbook: 95 pages. How to successfully plan for & manage your woodlot to meet your goals for forest health, wildlife, fire safety, water quality, or woodland products.

Beat the Rush!!

Get ready for your tree shipment by setting up a Planting Plan now. Kelly Smith, our SWCD Technician, is available to assist you with planning where to plant your trees, when to plant, & the best possible care for your trees. Protect your investment by purchasing a plan & implementing it. For conservation practice planning, call the Carlton SWCD at (218) 384-3891 to discuss your needs.

 Small Acreage Conservation Assessment

This service is available to landowners with land parcels under 20 acres. An SWCD staff member will come out and walk over your property with you. A short inventory will be completed to catalog what your property currently contains. Then, we will discuss your management goals, assess the potential for your property to meet your goals, layout a schedule for projects you want to complete, & identify sources of design assistance along with funding to help you implement your projects.

One section of the Conservation Assessment includes a Fire Wise Assessment. Fire Wise is a state program that evaluates your building site for defense against wildfire. It then identifies measures that will improve the chances of your buildings sustaining a wildfire.

Another section includes the National Arbor Day Foundation product titled “Backyard Woods”. This is a 42-page color publication including a 12-fact sheet companion that will help you realize the potential of your property. This is an excellent resource for information on real projects you can do on your property.

The cost of the Conservation Assessment is $300, which you will receive: a colored air photo of your property, the completed Conservation Assessment containing your property inventory & the Fire Wise Assessment, soils information for your property, the 42-page Backyard Woods publication & companion fact sheets, & a folder of valuable information & other resources.

Forest Stewardship Planning

A Forest Stewardship Plan is useful to qualify for Sustainable Forestry Incentive Act payments, recently $5.24/acre/year and rising. Our forestry specialist will walk through your woods with you, discuss your goals, inventory your trees, & prepare a plan to reach those goals. You will receive a thick binder full of forest management information. A Stewardship Plan can also be used to deduct the original basis of timber sales & forest management expense from taxes on any income. We can also tailor the plan to meet your Green Certification needs. The fee is $210 plus $6.50 per acre for new plans or $2.50 per acre for updated plans. Costs are often tax deductible. Call Kelly Smith at 384-3891 for more information.

Conservation Project Planning

The USDA Cost Share Programs can provide landowners of Carlton County with the funds to assist them with the implementation of a conservation project. Qualifying practices include: tree & shrub planting, wildlife habitat, & timber thinning. Contact the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Duluth at (218) 720-5209 ext. 3 for details.

Save Money—Plant Trees!

With energy costs at an all-time high, you can take steps to reduce your energy usage & ultimately your heating & cooling bills will begin to make “cents”. Plant trees! Mature trees can be a natural windbreak & provide shading for your home, saving you money & beautifying your community.

Some examples: Silver Maple is a great choice for planting, as it will get big, tall, & wide in a fairly short amount of time. It prefers sunny, moist soil sites, but will grow almost anywhere it is planted. It yields a large crown & provides a yellow colored leaf in autumn. Just remember not to plant them too close to your house as they can grow to 60 feet tall & 40 feet wide. White Spruce is another choice for a quick growing tree that provides shade & an excellent windbreak. It produces needles all the way to the ground & grows in most soils. Although it is tolerant of partial shade, it likes full sunlight. White Spruce will grow to 80 feet tall so use caution when planting near your house.

Tree Tips

It is crucial to the survival of your trees to get them in the ground within the first 24 hours. If you cannot plant them immediately, be sure to keep the roots cool (40º—50º) & moist, but not sitting in water. Ensure the successful growth of your seedlings by not coiling the roots when planting, watering seedlings frequently, & controlling the weeds that may compete with your seedlings for nutrients. The Minnesota SWCD Tree Handbook is a comprehensive guide with these tips & much more. Booklets are available while supplies last.
